art is not an object it is a way
i read this on facebook today. it is a comment by philosopher elbert hubbard posted by wirachai daochai.
what does it mean?
well i cannot interpret elbert.
what it means to me is close to the ideas of a number of art forms and cultural practices in Japan that have been described as ‘ways’, using the term ‘do’ which means way in Japanese.
e.g.
bushiDO - the way of of the samurai
sadDO - the way of tea (the tea ceremony)
this way or path seems to give the sense of process, of life-time journey, a journey that may not have an end: the goal is the journey.
i also related it to the famous statement by dance-theatre choreographer pina bausch who sated:
‘I am no not interested in how the body moves, but what moves the body’.
